Hi everybody!

Progress is slower then I thought. During Christmas Holidays I've been very busy studying and I still am. In the last three weeks I only occasionally worked on the game. That way I never really got into the 'flow' of game making which I get in when working on one project a lot. To make things worse for the development, I'm going on holidays for two weeks next Sunday. I know, it's a strange timing but I think I deserved some time in the son after spending a lot of time for my study. I can't wait to leave the freezing Netherlands for the sun!

However, development didn't entirely stop. I haven't worked on the AI as much as I said because big things require to get in the 'flow' I talked about. I did work on the statistics of the provinces. Although they are far from polished, I have worked out my ideas, which I'll discuss here.

Order
An important aspect is the order in a province. When the order is negative people might revolt which could lead to the independence of the province. Before this dramatic event a province will notice the negative order through corruption, so it will miss some of the income.
The most important way to keep order is by having a garrison, military units, in your province. Upgrading entertainment buildings and importing wine also improves the order.
One of the bad influences are taxes; nobody likes them. You can easily adapt the tax in your provinces. Further there is social unrest which is caused by demoting a populationunit, for example by demoting a citizen to a farmer. Promoting a unit gives benefits but reversing it will have consequences. Another aspect that influences order is the size of your population. If you reach a certain amount of civilians in your province the order will decrease. Furthermore there will be a factor caused by warexhaustion. When your at war a long time without making good progress your population will become rebellious. Last but certainly not least recently conquered provinces will encounter patriotism which causes negative order. This desire for liberty will slowly decrease.

Growth
The growth of your population is also determined by some factors. First of all there is a natural birth and death rate. The birthrate is a fixed percentage but the death rate will decrease by upgrading your health facilities. Furthermore there is the food supply. Food shortage will dramatically decrease population growth but overproduction of food will have a small positive effect. Food stocks can be increased by importing fish or cattle.
In ancient times rulers didn't rule the entire territory but only the civilized parts of their empire, the cities and the area around them. If your cities are doing well in a province, people from the unknown countryside will come there. So Urbanization is another aspect that influences growth. Urbanization will be determined by the public order and maybe other factors.
The last factor is the plague. This horrible disease will arise from time to time and will cause massive population decrease for some turns. The effect of the plague will decrease when better health facilities are available, but can't be entirely prevented.

Income
The last aspect of a province is the income. The most important factor is taxation, influenced by the amount of citizenunits and tax height. Some tradegoods also improve income. Bad influences are the cost of the garrison and the fleet and when there is a negative order corruption will decrease income.

That's about it. These three aspects are the things you have to keep in mind while governing your provinces. It might get a little complicated but after all it's a strategic game where you'll have to use your mind. I might add more factors that influence these aspects later, not sure yet.

It all sounds very good, at least that's how I think of it, but it will be hard to polish all factors so it will be fun to play. Even harder will be to make the AI react logically on the situation in his provinces. But I'm still full of good hope!

For more progress of the game you have to wait a few more weeks. I'm taking another break for two weeks but after that I'll be able to work on the game a lot more! Please be patient and in the meantime tell all strategyfans about this innovative gamemakergame!
